Robert Cummer is an engineer turned novelist who writes at the razor's edge where technical reality meets human survival. A veteran systems engineer with thirty years of experience in industrial automation and critical infrastructure, he holds multiple U.S. patents and brings a terrifying authenticity to political thrillers grounded in real engineering. He doesn't just guess how systems break—he spent three decades building them for major chemical and automotive giants.
But his stories are built on a foundation deeper than code. Born in 1970 and raised in the shadow of Flint, Michigan's industrial rise and fall, Robert is the product of a lineage defined by hard labor, quiet service, and the gray zones of survival.
He writes to honor the men who raised him. His maternal grandfather was a carpet layer who worked on his knees in the homes of automotive titans, while simultaneously running a “hush economy” numbers operation from an I.M.A. cup-vending crib inside the plant—teaching Robert that the official logs rarely match the real ones.
His paternal grandfather, Grandpa Cummer, was denied a high school education. He joined the Marines and survived Guadalcanal. After the Marine Corps, he continued his education, became a real estate broker, and led an early effort to create Michigan’s multiple listing system. The story that he won a downtown office building in a high-stakes poker game against sitting judges during his real estate career is family legend.
Adding to this DNA is Robert's father, a decorated Vietnam combat veteran with the 1st Air Cavalry who jumped into hot LZs in 1966. Currently, Robert serves as Chief Technical and Chief Operating Officer for Molly's Grape & Citrus, a Midland-based company known for its Molly Pop brand—where he oversees digital transformation, food safety, and compliance. The supply chain vulnerabilities he encounters daily drive Dark Recipe's plot.
The REAP System
Robert's invention of REAP (Recipe-Based Ecosystem for Agricultural Processes) for Controlled Environment Agriculture isn't just fiction—it's based on actual automation architectures he's designed. This deep technical knowledge allows him to craft scenarios that are terrifyingly plausible because they're grounded in real system vulnerabilities.
